The MVS Volvo Newsletter is a once-a-month email delivered to your email. These are the chemicals that make a difference o keeping it from boiling over and repairing damage to aluminum at a molecular level. Volvo HOAT contains Sebacic acid and some silicates on top of the normal OAT ingredient of 2 -EHA. (Did you ever notice that BMW coolant and Volvo coolant are exactly the same?). A HOAT is used in modern diesel engines and other turbos as well as all BMW and Mercedes. A Hybrid OAT (a mix of oat and other ingredients )is called a HOAT- Hybrid OAT.

Prestone is an OAT technology (Organic acid technology) coolant. If you have a non turbo car then you can use the regular Prestone. People who bash Prestone saying it is used for American cars (American engines worse than Volvo engine?) and boats etc.

If you feel that Volvo coolant is better, then by all means buy the Volvo coolant, I don’t b/c I don’t give in to “fear” created by car mfg’s. So stop the worry, buy the Green Prestone at local Walmart for $13/gallon, mix with distilled water and move on.

If you want to see the inside of the engine block of my 1998 BMW 528i with 160K miles (always had Prestone for > 10 years, changed every 3 years or so), see the photo. Have used Prestone in many Volvos and BMWs for 20 years zero issues. voodoorobazĪntifreeze: brands and underlying theory What about Prestone? Around that point, an abrupt turnabout occurs, and as more antifreeze is added, the freezing point rises almost as fast as it had previously dropped.įine with 50/50 mix really but with 70/30 I don’t have any leftover coolant to lay around my garage. The freezing point of an ethylene glycol and water mixture drops rapidly as the concentration of glycol is increased to a mixture of about 60% antifreeze and 40% water. It is only when water is added that the freezing point is depressed. 1997volvo850 Why Use Volvo Brand Coolant (Volvo Antifreeze)?Īctually, this is to be expected when one considers that ethylene glycol, the principal component of most antifreezes, freezes at 8 degrees above zero, Fahrenheit. That said, I’ll likely stick with either Zerex G-05 or Volvo blue. Volvo blue is $26.50.Īside from not mixing different coolant types it sounds like coolant type doesn’t really make a difference. In my area only a few places carry Zerex G-05 and it’s $19/gal. Are there any advantages to the blue Volvo coolant? I’ve seen price raised as a major reason to go with Zerex G-05.
